“楔形文字”这个名称，是英国人取的，叫cuneiform，来源于拉丁语，是cuneus（楔子）和forma（形状）两个单词构成的复合词。这个名称表达了古代美索不达米亚文字最本质的外在特征，其实楔形文字同世界上其他民族的文字一样，经历了从符号到文字的发展过程。
楔形文字是苏美尔人的一大发明。苏美尔文由图画文字最终演变成楔形文字，经历了几百年的时间，大约在公元前2500年左右才告完成。
考古发现已经证实，在古代美索不达米亚，最初的文字外观形象并不像楔形，而只是一些平面图画。显然，被后世称为楔形文字的美索不达米亚古文字，正是起源于图画式象形文字。
