女贞是一种常绿的乔木，它的叶子随落随长。如果夏季出现反常，只落叶，不长叶（或长的叶子很少），好似要进入冬天休眠一样，则预示着未来2—3个月内将有一场秋季连阴雨天气，即如谚语所云：“女贞叶落尽，当秋必主淋。”
紫茉莉又称胭脂花，夏季开花，有紫、红、白等色。通常头天傍晚开花，第二天早晨凋萎。
