而该拷贝属第一版完成后期拷贝，刚送检的问卷及影评场次，故此未知是否最终版本。《投名状》从剧本上来看，可算是分野鲜明。

全片两小时刚好分为四个部份，先描述李连杰的庞青云在一役中战败偷生，遇上了当匪的赵二虎（刘德华饰）及姜午阳（金城武饰），继而开始了立下投名状结为兄弟的故事。全片之起，在於他们相识，继而他们在青云劝下投靠青兵，攻打太平天国。

接着是他们的胜仗，不过同时为因为二虎之妻莲生又与青云暗生情愫，开始了两人间裂痕，最终三人内讧。从剧本上看，是一个十分稳阵的标准格局。

不过，稳阵者，则代表没有甚新惊喜。电影在初期刻意地与邵氏的《刺马》划清界线，其实主要是因为故事实在重心不同。

在节奏上，电影相比起同类型的战争片如西片《天国王朝》或内地片《集结号》来说，效果较接近前者。电影利用了内地拍摄本身的人力资源，刻意地以时快时慢的节奏来描述战争。

电影里煽情度其实亦有，不过部份重点场面，则刻意避免，希望将其重心放回在三位主角性格上的改变。电影的战争动作不多，抱看大场面入场的，没有满足感可言。
