The Red Detachment of Women (Chinese: 红色娘子军, pinyin: Hóngsè Niángzǐjūn) is a Chinese ballet which premiered in 1964. It is perhaps best known in the West as the ballet performed for U.S. President Richard Nixon on his visit to China in February 1972. Based on the novel of the same title as well as the film adapted from the novel by Liang Xin, it depicts the liberation of a peasant girl in Hainan Island and her rise in the Chinese Communist Party. The ballet was later adapted to a Beijing opera, and as the ballet itself, both stage and film versions were produced.
The film version of the ballet made Xue Jinghua (as Wu Qinghua) and Liu Qingtang (as Hong Changqing) superstars along with a dozen other artists who were cast as protagonists in other model plays of the time.
It is one of the so-called eight model plays, the only plays, ballets and operas permitted in China during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). With The White Haired Girl it is regarded as a classic Chinese ballet, and its music is familiar to almost every Chinese person who grew up during that time. It was made into a film in 1972 and is now part of the permanent repertoire of the National Ballet of China.
Despite its political overtone and historical background when it was created, it remains a favorite of music and ballet lovers nearly 30 years after the Cultural Revolution in China. Many numbers were based on the folk songs of Hainan Island, a place that, with its coconut trees rustling in tropical wind, evokes much romantic ethos. Though there are unmistakable elements of Chinese music, the music of this ballet was performed with basically a Western symphony orchestra.
It was written as a collaboration, with music by Du Mingxin, Wu Zuqiang, Wang Yanqiao, Shi Wanchun and Dai Hongcheng, and choreography by Li Chengxiang, Jiang Zuhui and Wang Xixian.

恰似仙境般的人间佳境,绿树成荫,鸟语花香。这就是娘子军连的驻地,一群花样年华的红军女战士,就在这儿落脚。
看了电视中把红军置入如此美丽的地方驻防,真令人羡慕,让人会萌生出去当一回党代表的想法。后来因驻地被南霸天查知,娘子军连再度转移,这一次所到之地更美,俨然一个天然渡假村,阳光、海浪、沙滩,还有一群朝气蓬勃的姑娘。
洪常青和吴琼花被姑娘们有意地掇合到沙滩上散步,那碧水云天,佳人作伴的场景,看了以后谁都会为之心动。 《历史的天空》中饰演东方闻樱的演员殷桃,在《红色娘子军》中出演主角吴琼花,给我们带来了一个青春偶像版的红色经典新形象,与电影中的吴琼花有着不同的气质,与样板戏中的吴清华则更是相去甚远,电视中的吴琼花总体表现得更是青春靓丽。
电视中新加入了一个角色,由南洋归来参加革命的姑娘,同伴们称她为南洋女。以我看,这个南洋女才是令人喜欢的角色。
南洋女漂亮“洋气”见过世面,知书达礼,心胸宽阔,意志坚定,吃苦耐劳,懂得体贴,把整个娘子军连的姑娘们衬托得土气十足。她告诉姑娘们党代表常作的手势“V”代表着胜利,她理所当然地成为教员教姑娘们识字;她的射击技术因曾经在南洋常玩猎枪而技高一筹,她在南洋是游泳冠军,所以吴琼花与她比游泳技术时只得甘拜下风而“耍赖皮”。
南洋女在电视中虽然只是吴琼花的陪衬,但事实上更讨人喜欢,形象更为高大。当假特派员到来,派工作组把南洋女当作奸细抓了之后,她表现出的高风亮节实为一个女人很难做到的。
后来被南霸天俘获,她与一同归来的未婚夫,在父老乡亲面前举行了一场类式于“刑场上的婚礼”而被杀害。南洋女的形象完整谢幕,令人唏嘘不已。
《红色娘子军》比以往的电影和样板戏好看,主要是摒弃了那种时代的“左”的影响。南霸天的角色也很丰满,以我看,如果说南霸天是一个开明绅士的话,则比以前所有影视作品的类似角色更饱满,一方面,他饱读诗书、举止风雅、仗义疏财,简直是不可多得的一个“人才”;另一方面,他财大势大,为了维护自身利益,也不乏巧取豪夺,有着内心残忍和恶毒的一面,对其他乡绅势力也形成极大威胁。
他为了笼络红军家属,施以怀柔政策,竟然能做到开仓放粮。电视中对南霸天的总体形象描述也显得极其自然,很少雕做的痕迹。
吴琼花与南霸天结下不共戴天之仇,起因是南霸天的手下放火烧了吴琼花的家,事实上也是南霸天放任手下的所作所为,最终霸占了她家的地,欠下了烧死三个家人的血债。 吴琼花的形象,随剧情的进展,逐渐变得公式化了。
开始阶段,她天不怕地不怕,敢作敢为,反叛精神强烈,表现得极为突出,是一个可爱可敬的角色。按南霸天的说法,她“杀人放火,无所不作,非常历害”。
后来,在娘子军连表现进步,虽有很多冲动出格之处,但逐渐成熟,“进步”很大,也就磨平了她性格中那种桀骜不驯的棱角,成长起来。不过,由于演员殷桃的长相气质,后来的成熟总觉得缺乏某种成熟的韵味,而更像是难以脱离青春偶像般的表演。
《红色娘子军》在细节上有很多缺陷,特别值得一说的是“假特派员”的情节。也许这是当今所有的革命题材作品都无法逾越过去的原因,所以电视中也只能以“假特派员”来代替。
实际上,同时期,全国苏区都在“肃反”。如果真象电视中所述,师长都被假特派员关了起来,那么整个红军独立师则完全被控制在这个“国军袁处长”手中,哪还需要“剿匪”,假特派员完全可以随便发一个命令就毁掉整个红军琼崖独立师。

如果没有《沙家浜》的热播,《红色娘子军》遭到的冷遇恐怕就更没啥可说的了。这部戏的无人喝彩还是出在自身的改编和表演上。
同是红色经典改编剧,《沙家浜》创造了同期收视第一的佳绩。一个春来茶馆,演绎出了很多横生枝丫让人牵肠挂肚的情节。而梅龙镇的这支娘子军,从成立到成熟,演绎的故事却单一、沉闷、不抓人。一位资深评论人分析,当年,影片《红色娘子军》的影响力与京戏《沙家浜》相差无几。陈强饰演的南霸天的阴狠、王心刚饰演的洪常青的大气、祝希娟饰演的吴琼花的野性,给万千观众留下的印象不可谓不深;一首“向前进,向前进,战士的责任重,妇女冤仇深”至今还脍炙人口;而洪常青假扮华侨富商周旋于南府的戏剧性,娘子军的传奇性等,也给电视剧的二度创作留下了充裕的改编空间。但是电视剧的剧本并没在合理的框架内提供给大家更富想象力的故事情节。
演员对老片子的重新演绎也没有获得观众的认可。刘佩琦饰演的南霸天,斯文有余,而枭雄之气不足,让人看不出雄霸一方的凶横与强悍。您毕竟不是古龙笔下风流儒雅的楚留香或吟诗弄月的陆小凤。而娘子军传奇性的战歌,是由一些被逼上梁山的苦大仇深的山村女子谱写的,绝不是那种娉娉婷婷的做派和莺歌燕语般的情致。虽然时代不同了,此时代的偶像或与彼时代的偶像有区别,但英雄偶像和青春偶像还是有着鲜明的气质分别。这一点,编导在把握上不当。
