所谓相声，最初就是摹仿各种声音，如摹仿人声、鸟声、兽声、风声、水声及其他宇宙间各种声音等。我认为战国时孟尝君的门客学鸡叫以解其危，就是相声的先行者。厥后历代相传，能者辈出，渐形成一种艺术。比及蒲松龄先生《聊斋志异》上《口技》一文中所写的表演者，已具有相声之雏形。再后表演者大部摹仿人声，又在其中掺上故事，于是相声艺术，乃告成功。现在舞台上的相声艺种，有单口、双口之分；后者较易，前者较难。
相声艺术，北京盛行较早，最初是设一步帐，一人坐于帐内，学兽叫、鸟叫以及各种单独的声音，听众在帐外围听。后来把它综合起来，掺进一个故事，成为较有系统的声音。这叫做“暗相声”。像当时一般流行的《醉鬼还家》、《五子闹学》等，就是最显著的例子。《醉鬼还家》段子表演情况如下：忽听见帐内好像有一人在走动，接着打门声、开门声、小儿哭声、夫妻吵架声、摔碗声、鼾睡声，依次而至。听众捧腹大笑。再后，把帐子去掉，在地上拜一长桌，一人立于桌后，学各省方言以及各行各业的叫卖声。这就叫做“明相声”。
据我所知，咸丰年间，北京有一朱绍文先生（别号“穷不怕”），是最早说相声的人。他八十多岁时，我才十来岁，犹及得见。他原来是学京戏的，唱小花脸。后来因为照清朝规矩，不是天天能唱戏的，如斋日（祭天、祭地之日）、辰日（皇帝、皇后、太后之忌日），都必须停止动响器，当然更不能唱了。这些日子总算起来，每年多至五、六十天，各戏园就得一律停演。若赶上所谓“国孝”（即皇帝、皇后、太后死了），便要规定二十七个月不准唱戏。我本人赶上过光绪、西太后的国孝，虽说是缩减了，但还须百日不准动响器。百日后，不准化装唱戏，马鞭子只许用青、蓝、白三色，不准用红的。这么一来唱戏的就失业了。朱先生想出一个办法，拿白沙子撒地作字，以吸引观众。等到大家聚拢之后，他就在甬路旁边，手拿竹板（不禁止）两块作响器，唱几段小花脸数板，再说几段小故事，要钱。他还研究好了几个小段子，如：“勃勃名”、“百鸟名”、“百兽名”、“百虫名”、“青菜名”、“京戏名”等。另外，又自己编了五诉功——“胡不剌诉功”、“堆子兵诉功”、“棒子面诉功”、“夏布褂诉功”、“厨子诉功”；两本小书——《千字文》、《百家姓》等。这样他就绘声绘影地说起来了，很受群众欢迎。以后他又把京戏中《背娃入府》、《一匹布》、《打沙锅》等戏的内容，改编成小故事，在街头演唱，生意更加好了。于是每遇见辰、斋等日，他就以相声补缺，到咸丰国孝时，即正式以说相声为生了。国孝后，戏班再邀他去唱戏，均行谢绝。以后又带徒弟，即创出了这一行。
